As many of you know I became a dad not too long ago, and my interest in kids’ lit and especially music-themed texts for young people has been deepening. Among the latter category one book that stands out is Ballet for Martha: Making Appalachian Spring by Jan Greenberg & Sandra Jordan and illustrated by Brian Floca. Its emphasis on collaboration – specifically the meeting of the minds of Martha Graham, Aaron Copland and Isamu Noguchi that yielded Appalachian Spring – offers young readers a unique object lesson in the possibilities of creative partnership.
