Eerie glimpses of Detroit’s neglected and decayed entertainment venues, from the stunning photobook The Ruins of Detroit by Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre. The first image in the gallery shows the interior of the United Artists Theater, which among its many incarnations was a recording space for the Detroit Symphony from 1979 to 1983. The Vanity Ballroom, pictured second, hosted performances by the likes of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Louis Prima, Tommy Dorsey and Cab Calloway during its lifetime as the city’s leading dance hall.

Spiegel is featuring thirty five of Marchand and Meffrethe’s images in a mind-blowing slideshow documenting the delapidation of America’s former industrial capitol. If you’re interested in further reading I highly recommend Buildings of Detroit for backstories on all of these structures [and many others].
