A world of sound

Ever wonder what Mozart sounds like on a two-stringed long neck lute from Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu Autonomous Province in China? Wonder no more:

Arrangement for donbola of the rondo from Mozart’s Piano Sonata K. 331
Performer unknown – recorded by Colin Huehns in Shawan, China

This recording is one of thousands available on demand at the newly updated Archival Sound Recordings website of the British Library. Ranging from classical, jazz and folk music performances to anthropological, historical and nature sounds, the library’s archive offers a fascinating way to explore our world and its history through listening.

Note: Much of the classical music on the site is available only to UK visitors; hopefully the BL will work to settle licensing issues surrounding musical recordings so that they can be accessed worldwide.
