Influence in the creative process, then and now.

The first image is a symphonic fugue by Salzburg composer Michael Haydn, copied out by Mozart in 1783 for his own study and use. Below it is a considerably more recent example of a composer assimilating influence – Michael Gilbertson, who admits ‘when I begin the process of writing a piece, I sometimes make a list of musical ideas from other sources I want to adopt into my sound world.’ Much more from these two Michaels [no Mozart this time] tomorrow night.
