Iconic views of early twentieth-century New York City, inspiration for Michael Gilbertson’s new orchestral piece Tragedy Tomorrow. Its first performance is Saturday at the WCFSO, and as part of our introduction to the work Michael will join us onstage to connect these images with a variety of musical elements in the piece:
Tragedy Tomorrow is a musical portrait of New York City in the 1920s: the Hindenburg looming above the city, the sunburst design on the Chrysler Building, traffic on Fifth Avenue, a dark, romantic club. The intention of this piece is not to conjure up these images, but to capture the era’s fragile spirit of optimism and abandon.
