Mahler grooves, in full color!
So apparently the New York Philharmonic is on Tumblr. Nice – I can finally upgrade this scan [from the actual paper edition of the New York Times] of Leonard Bernstein’s title page enhancement to his Mahler 6 score.

Love the look of this promo from Best Made Company and, yes, I do own an axe [albeit a lesser one]. But the main reason I’m posting this: the spooky sonic backdrop by none other than composer-of-the-moment Nico Muhly.

But what about the art? →
The Rambler weighs in on two recent copyright throwdowns mangled by the Royal Opera House:
‘Copyright was never intended primarily as a means for generating income … the goals [were] not wealth creation, but the promotion of enlightenment through the increased creation and provision of works of literature and learning.’
Sadly this historical and legal truth is news to the...

New music makes an orchestra
When the Louisville Orchestra contacted me several years ago about joining its artistic staff I was immediately interested for two very specific reasons – the orchestra’s historic, city-wide music education program and its legendary series of commissions and world premiere performances, recordings and broadcasts during the middle part of the twentieth century. That latter aspect of the...

[Perhaps the new content attribution feature will take care of that.] The very best of these modernist record jackets, including the...

4'33" → The playlist
Inspired by Alex Ross’ post-modern tribute to John Cage on what would have been the composer’s 98th birthday, here is my 4’33” playlist consisting of every track in my music library whose length matches that of Cage’s 1952 conceptual composition. Do your eyes a favor and view the hi-res version.
Like Alex I have a preponderance of Cage-length Mozart, but more...

The Real Ping?
Music fiends and tech geeks among you no doubt followed Apple’s product announcement yesterday; I watched it on my phone. [Hey look, a major media company unafraid to provide high quality live video on a mobile platform!] Of the new offerings the one that immediately got my attention was Ping, an iTunes-based social music service. I am a longtime Last.fm user and have been frustrated that...
